Fioricet vs Tramadol–Which is Better

Posted by admin 15 April, 2009

I‘ve heard a lot about Fioricet vs Tramadol, and I began to wonder which is the best for me. I get these severe headaches from time to time. In fact, they can be so bad that they keep me in bed for days a time, and they prevent me from eating, sleeping, watching TV, and in general, from enjoying life. I’ve tried the over-the-counter remedies, from aspirin to Tylenol to Ibuprofen, but nothing seems to work. So, I decided to do some investigating on my own to see if either one of these strong painkillers is right for me.

In my quest to make a more informed decision about which to pick from Fioricet vs Tramadol, I first decided to take a look at Fioricet. It is made from a combination of butalbital, which is a barbiturate; acetaminophen, and caffeine. It is commonly used to treat tension headaches, muscle contraction headaches, and migraines (although it is not FDA indicated for this). It works by affecting the central nervous system, and the caffeine is believed to cause the blood vessels to constrict. The usual adult dosage is 1-2 tablets every four hours.

On the other side of the Fioricet vs Tramadol coin, Tramadol is used to treat moderate to severe pain, and is even believed to help with anxiety and depression. The typical dose can range from 50-400 mg. It is even used in veterinary medicine to treat dogs and cats for cancer-related pain. It is not considered to be a controlled substance in the United States, but is in other countries, such as Australia and Sweden. It can have the same effects as an opiate, although it’s not classified as one.

When it comes to the side effects portion of Fioricet vs Tramadol, they both, like just about every prescription medications on the market, potentially have their fair share. They both can cause nausea, drowsiness, and vomiting, and Tramadol can even cause seizures when taken in high doses. Both drugs should be avoided by pregnant women unless deemed medically necessary. As far as which one is best for you or me, the only person who knows that for sure is a trained physician. It sounds like Fioricet is more geared towards treating migraine and tension headaches, which are what I suffer from, but the only way to know for sure is to try them and see which works best.
